RT @yongfook: I built an AI slop machine over the weekend. I will never launch it, after seeing what I created. You put in a story prompt, and it generates a more structured story with stakes, cliffhangers, a beginning, middle, end. Splits it into episodes. Storyboards the whole thing, makes a cast, music, poster, voiceovers. Then generates the visuals (different styles available from anime to cinematic) and you can play the episode as a slideshow, or render it as a video. Uses all the latest models that you would expect. A few observations from this exercise: 1) it was trivial to build There's no moat here. This is just "AI glue", building an app that wraps several AI models. The moat is the GTM strategy, which leads me to... 2) this space is insanely competitive there's tons of AI movie makers all using the same models with some thin layer of prompt direction or UX as the differentiation. totally saturated. 3) AI video courses I noticed that some of the biggest advertisers in this space are people selling "how to create your own AI movie" courses. There's something off about this, almost dropshippy. It suggests that there's more value in hyping the thing and selling courses about the thing, than there is in the thing. 4) this shit is really expensive All of those cool AI videos that you see using the latest video models, are expensive to make. A 60 second "mini episode" of a story built using my platform would cost $5 in raw inference. There's no business here, whatever margin you put on top of that can just get eaten by a competitor. And imagine if a user buys $100 of credits (of which $90 is passed through to your AI provider) then decides they hate the movie that was created, and asks for a refund or charges back. Enough of those in a month will bankrupt you. 5) just didn't feel right It's a fun little demo that got some laughs from my friends but ultimately it's contributing to the never ending pile of AI slop. Is that something I want to be part of? Not really.

In the US, Trump got cleared of that, but in Brazil, Bolsonaro got jailed for 27 years because of that Brazil reminds me of South Korea where every new president tries to jail the previous president, it's a different type of politics Many Brazilians don't like either Lula or Bolsonaro by the way, realizing the system is so corrupt it doesn't really matter who you put in power, so they essentially protest vote for one to avoid the other, not liking either One interesting thing about Brazil more recently is how the Supreme Court judges are allegedly used by the ruling president to influence politics, censoring speech against the current government (again quite similar to what Biden was doing) Brazil's politics to me feel very heavily influenced by the US but with a 2 year delay because when US has elections in 2024, Brazil has them 2 years later in 2026. Their political swings have always followed the US ever since they started getting elections with just 2 exceptions in 2000 and 2004 (Bush in US vs Lula in BR) Knowing how accurate @Polymarket bets usually are (it predicted Trump winning in 2024 when the media said he'd lose) this will be very interesting. Funnily enough Lula has banned Polymarket and other prediction platforms in April this year, probably out of fear it'd influence the elections If Bolsonaro wins, many people predict the Supreme Court judges will try annull the election and declare it faulty, which will be another period of drama in Brazil!

I keep going more niche with reverse engineered web-based versions of games 👉 https://ut.pieter.com/ 👈 6 months ago I tried to reverse engineer Urban Terror Urban Terror was kind of a Counter-Strike style mod on top of the Quake 3 Arena engine, I think @Erwin_AI got me to play this during COVID Because it runs on Quake 3's engine like RTCW and Q3 itself, I thought I could just use ioquake3 and WASM to run it on web, then add a multiplayer server and it'd just work... But no it didn't, I got stuck 6 months ago, it was buggy and wouldn't work, I kept trying and kinda got it to load but not really play Today I tried it again with Opus 5.5 and again, I couldn't get it to work, giving up I did a last try with Fable 5.1 on high effort and it after awhile it did figure out the issue! "The engine's struct was 4 bytes longer than what UT's bytecode expects, everything after that point (the entity count and the entity list) was read 4 bytes off" It rewrote the bytecode and made it work! So now we have another game preserved, running 100% the web via WASM, with a multiplayer server tied to it, so you can play with your friends 😊 Every model that comes out makes a bit more things possible and you can just keep trying old things that didn't work before I see lots of people mod modern games now too which looks very cool too Here I'm playing it with @marckohlbrugge a few minutes ago! I think this is super accurate AGI might just create a two-tier split in society, and I'm kinda starting to see it around me One part of society will succumb to AI slopscrolling and free money (basic income) from government as work is replaced by AGI The other part will fight that instead and become an elite counter movement that focuses on IRL, family, local community, and health I think many will be in kind of smaller communities (kind of like eco villages in the pic below), and my friend @csonotes is a good example of that and we try do the same (so I'm probably biased) @okaythenfuture below thinks it'll be in the central parts of big cities though Maybe both? For both of them you need real estate and land though Real estate and land also one of the few scarce resources left in a post-AGI world where almost every good becomes almost free If you told me a decade ago I'd want to buy real estate and land I'd call you crazy, but post-AGI it makes a lot of sense I think

🇪🇺 EU bankruptcies have now reached the highest level since they started measuring them in 2019 Meanwhile new EU business registrations have been stagnant or decreasing I discovered this after another one of the interior design stores in the Netherlands we bought from suddenly disappeared off the internet, luckily we already received the stuff we ordered (a big stone table) and dodged a bullet Quite expensive stuff and their Trustpilot is full of "where's my €7000 table". This is the second interior design store we bought from that went bankrupt just after we received our things, very interesting So I started looking at EU bankruptcies and discovered they're skyrocketing and new business registrations are stagnant or decreasing They really managed to regulate and tax away any existing business while making people give up to even think of starting a business in Europe

This is a very interesting effect too They're boiling the frog and making everyone poorer But most Westerners don't notice it, partly because prices of flights, hotels, travel as a whole has gone up so much (again it hasn't, we've all just been made poorer collectively) And if you can't travel far, you can't notice how rich and modern parts of the non-West now are (Asia etc)

We've cut off alcoholics in our friend group before because they are kind of a lethal risk to the tribe After lots of warnings of course I think being an alcoholic you don't realize slowly all your friends get the fuck out and stop hanging with you because you're such a liability This guy in particular was causing havoc by the way, it was getting very weird at parties and the last thing I remember is him spreading his arms in a regular restaurant shouting "I LOVE ALCOHOL" And buying shots for all the staff and forcing them to drink them (the staff did not want to drink shots) It was a great decision

I've been actively fighting almost guaranteed age-related loneliness for years, studies show after age 30 you start seeing friends less and when you get older especially men don't have any social life left! It's preventable, but it takes effort and initiative We've now organized 70 weekly coworking days where we meet with friends and work together, do show and tell, and try help each other make things (also hardware stuff more recently) We've also started organizing movie nights, art nights, barbecues, we watched the World Cup final on a projector screen in the garden with friends We did a collage night the other day where we bought cheap gossip magazines, colored paper, and Pritt glue, and gave everyone scissors to make their own art, I think nobody spent time on their phone for at least 4 hours, making things puts you in a flow state and it's fun to do it in a group because you talk about different stuff while making things than you would for ex having a dinner Movie nights are nice too but less popular I think cause everyone prefers to watch movies alone and also you can't really talk during a movie Coworkings range from having sometimes 20 people to sometimes just 2 people, people have their own lives, but me and @rameerez still try to organize them weekly One thing I realized is that we are usually the ones organizing stuff, but that's not a bad thing, there's even studies about this, there's usually a few people in a group who organize most of the events If nobody in your group organizes stuff, it doesn't mean nobody wants to do stuff, but you have to take the initiative to bring people together which isn't easy in a time where phones and apps and the internet are simply easier and cheaper dopamine than driving to a friends house for a party You can start with a coworking day, everyone brings their laptop, and you provide WiFi and coffee, then later you can try more types of events Having an active social life is just as important or in some studies even more important for health than physical fitness After a nice party I feel tired but satisfied, I had fun and didn't spend time on my phone or computer but instead talked and laughed with friends etc. We don't drink alcohol with very few exceptions and nor do our friends, so it's mostly just having really nice food and sparkling water or kombucha etc, and we don't really need alcohol, after a few hours it gets fun enough anyway! So I recommend everyone, take initiative, and organize something and get people together, it'll be fun! 😊

Great article on increasing solitude of our societies, in this case US but same probably in EU to a lesser extent: "Derek Thompson's essay "You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner" argues that Americans have largely stopped having people over. The headline stat comes from combining the old DDB Needham Life Style surveys Robert Putnam used in *Bowling Alone* with a new replication by Data For Progress. The share of Americans who host friends or family at home at least monthly fell from 42% in 1975 to 12% in 2026, roughly a 70% drop. Most other forms of socializing also fell by double digits over the last 30 years, including cards, bars, sporting events, and volunteering. The decline in hosting was steeper than the much-discussed drop in church attendance. He rules out two comforting explanations. People haven't just moved dinners to restaurants, since solo dining is rising and face-to-face socializing is down overall. They also haven't replaced parties with other social activities. Exercise and travel are up, but exercise is mostly solitary, and time spent at home has jumped sharply since the 2010s. His explanations: 1. Harried dual-earner households. As societies get richer, leisure starts to feel like work, and planning a dinner party is basically unpaid project management. Women historically ran the family social calendar. When they moved into paid work, men didn't take over that job. He admits this can't be the whole story, because total leisure time has actually increased. 2. Intensive parenting. Parents, especially fathers, now spend far more time with their kids, and that time comes out of evenings that used to go to hosting adults. 3. Shrinking friend networks. Close friendships are declining, most sharply among people without college degrees, so hosting is becoming a luxury good. People who never host skew toward independents and non-graduates. He speculates that weaker social ties may lead to weaker party attachment, rather than the other way around. 4. Home is too comfortable. Americans spent almost two extra hours a day at home between 2003 and 2022, much of it on screens and short-form video. His closing idea is a "Lump of Leisure" theory, a twist on the Lump of Labor fallacy. Technology hasn't made human work unnecessary, but it has made other people less necessary for fun. Social leisure turns out to be finite and easy to displace. He frames this as a coordination failure rather than a personal one: a dinner party requires schedules, cleaning, food, allergies, and the risk of a dull evening, while TikTok asks nothing of you. Okay so here's how it works Automation makes things cheaper, for ex centuries ago most people worked in agriculture, then we automated that and now it's like 1% in developed countries, completely due to automation The same will happen for every industry with AGI, especially once we get humanoid (or other shape) AGI-assisted robots 1kg of tomatoes cost $2.50 today, farmer gets $1.25, shop gets $0.50, wholesaler gets $0.25, logistics is $0.50 Farming will keep getting cheaper with AGI, shopping will move to house delivery only fully automated by delivery robots, no need for a wholesaler anymore, logistics will be fully self driving robots All the costs go lower and lower and then reach close to $0

I think this is true and I do like it Although you have to be VERY careful not to isolate yourself, which does happen once you get rich @csonotes always trolls me for being at home in my "aquarium" and he's right, once your home is so great it becomes a prison, so you have to force yourself to go out! We travel a lot of the time though so this is just a home base and it's NICE to be home, but yes you gotta fight the isolation risk

Now it's 10 years since you get your residence permit I have friends waiting 6 years to get residence permit, then add 10 years from that so 16 years for a passport Many foreigners are leaving now to Spain and elsewhere It's disgusting behavior, it's really just a dysfunctional government on every level and it's crazy how they've treated foreigners who pumped millions into their economy The state itself doesn't function, infrastructure doesn't function, I sound like I complain but it's just how it is. Anti business regulation and high and odd taxes make it so that businesses don't want new clients, and service generally sucks and all the skilled people leave Portugal, so you're left with mostly the lowest skilled people People don't like if I'm honest though, they want an either "it's great" or "it's bad" My daily life is great though, Portugal itself is beautiful, we live on the coast, clean air (no industry), have a new house with home gym, sauna, pool, solar, batteries, 100kg of meat, barbeque, our friends live near us It's so hard to explain that because it's not black and white, and it's also culturally dependent. We have some Spanish friends and they seem to be much more okay with the total dysfunction because they're used to Spain The alternatives are Spain where you have the Hacienda (IRS) hunting foreigners for paying their tax, Italy and Greece which I heard are even more dysfunctional So I think we're okay for now, we use Portugal as a base but over half the time we live elsewhere like Brazil or are traveling to Miami etc

He's right, the only good Portuguese food is grilled fish and it's just a fish on a grill with some salt put on Portuguese that stay in Portugal have low standards and they don't have the money to travel far so they're in this vicious cycle where they think their food is great but they don't have anything to compare it with International food is okay to bad here especially in Lisbon due to a shortage of workers so most of the kitchen is Nepalese and usually unskilled There's a few exceptions like Honest Greens but it's by foreigners If Portuguese food was so great, there'd be Portuguese restaurants around the world but it's not and there's not. Just like how there's no Dutch restaurants, it's just not good food

Across Asia I can generally land, get a SIM with working data in minutes and maybe even open a bank account within an hour. For years you could get a CPF by email, so you'll find countless people telling you online it's quick and easy. That information is now out of date. Here's the truth as of 2026: You used to be able to get the whole thing done at Banco do Brasil or the Correios for R$7. Now they just charge you to fill out and print a form you can do yourself online for free. Bargain. Either way, you then have to take the form to the Receita Federal (RF). You can't just turn up during opening hours either. You won't even get past the security guard. It took two trips before he finally shared the secret: you need to be there at 8am, an hour before they open, because they only issue 15 CPFs per day. 🤯 So on the third trip I at least knew to turn up early. I was 3rd in line and it still took 2 hours, but I did at least get confirmation my CPF would arrive by email within a week. Hard part over. You'd think. Then came the phone number. I tried to buy a Vivo eSIM online, but to buy a Brazilian phone number from their website you need a Brazilian phone number to sign up. Makes sense, why else would you be wanting to buy a phone number from a telco if you didn't already have one. 🐔🥚 So I figured I'd try going to a store. They tell me they don't sell prepaid SIMs or issue eSIMs, and that I should go buy one at a kiosk. Apple stores also don't sell iPhones anymore I hear. The kiosk sells physical SIMs. Fine. I'll activate it in my old phone, convert it to eSIM and move it to my real phone. I am sure that'll all go smoothly. I figured activation would work at least. Nope. I text my CPF to the activation number and they say it's invalid. Awesome. Of course it is. Why would that work. 🤪 The store can't activate it either. Apparently it can take ~3 months for a new CPF to propagate through their systems and I need to “use it in other systems” in the meantime, like the supermarket. Five hours of online support later (they do let you AFK at least 🙃), they finally activate the SIM using a photo of my passport next to my CPF on my phone. Except because it was activated with my passport, not my CPF, I can't convert it to eSIM or use their app, and they text me every few days threatening to deactivate my line. Wonderful. Then they tell me the SIM can't even receive SMS until I top it up. Makes sense, why make it work like other telcos when you can add random extra steps. So I try to top it up, but their website requires SMS verification to do that, and my phone can't even receive that SMS. One must already have credit to acquire credit. Nice. So I top it up through Ding instead. Why not, we've come this far. I'd have used my Brazil bank but of course I can't get one of those until the number works. Now I finally have a working Brazilian SIM with data, but only in my old phone, and every few days they text me that my CPF is invalid and they're going to deactivate my line. Done? Done. Next the bank. I discover that most banks won't let a foreigner open an account with just a CPF anymore. My friends have all kinds of accounts that you can no longer obtain. You now need additional Brazilian ID that generally only residents and long-term visa holders can obtain. I did eventually manage to open a C6 account and get PIX working, but that account is tied to the same phone number that may randomly self-immolate. So after a week I have a CPF that some systems recognize and some don't, a bank account tied to that number, and a SIM card I can't put in my actual phone. At least I can finally pay for my own Mate 😂🍹 Welcome to Brazil 🇧🇷

I plug my Starlink on the roof with a LAN cable straight into a Unifi router with 3 APs (one on each floor's ceiling) and 2 outdoor APs You can't rely on the Starlink WiFi too much because it's so compact and the WiFi router is INSIDE the dish, so if it's outside and you close the doors the signal isn't great Gotta LAN it up

📡 Kinda anecdotal but I now have 2 friends with @Starlink (and so 3 if you include me) I loaned my Starlink Mini to @mick__net after his 🇵🇹 Portuguese ISP @NOS was (and still is!) down for 2+ months, while he lives 500 meters away from the NOS headquarters in Lisbon 😂 Nobody can fix it, customer support is useless and even cancelling his plan is difficult Anyway Starlink Mini got him his internet back immediately and saved his ass cause he had to work, and now he ordered his own and gave mine back, which I then used for traveling in Greece, and he's a Starlink convert Now today my other friend @cso_notes also got one in 🇷🇴 Romania! Adoption in Europe always comes a bit later than in US, but I think Starlink is starting to get a significant presence now Many people who I tell about Starlink are still skeptical about satellite internet, they always talk about latency issues, and they think latency is like 1 second but it's more like 10ms (1/100th of a second) which is the same or better than regular fiber internet I've never had so LITTLE issues with internet as since I had Starlink, it's never been down, it always just works and customer support is via chat and works really well I absolutely HATE having to call a phone number and be on hold for 30min or more and then wasting most of my day on stuff like this, which par for the course with Portuguese ISPs (and well every Portuguese business) So having Starlink is a godsend for me, it just works! 🙏

Spend less -> lower costs -> more profit -> more money saved -> more money to invest -> more % returns on investments And at some point that investment return starts to pass by your business revenue which it has for me for about a year now Most of my investments have been simple ETFs like Vanguard S&P500, but also a few lucky stock and startup bets that worked out: Back in 2022, I couldn't get any available GPUs, so I thought it might be smart to buy Nvidia if there's such a shortage and that was a good bet too Then back in 2023 @dannypostma recommended me to invest in the companies we used for our AI inference for our photo AI apps, so I did that too. First I invested in @replicate and then also @FAL From then I just asked every app/service I used if I could invest, like @cursor_ai in 2025 which then got acquired by @spacex recently! My business revenue has remained very stable at about $200K-$250K/mo, but even with that investment returns have now surpassed that Investments fluctuate a lot so some years it's up some years it might be down a lot (who isn't expecting a big crash at some point?), and most investment gains are unrealized (I never sell!), so keep that with a big grain of salt! I keep my revenue/gains together with my profit margin and my sleep score in my situation monitor dashboard, as those are equally important :D Many people in the last decade told me to spend all my money, either personally or with my business to grow it, we don't know how that would have ended up, maybe my companies would be bigger, but I'm happy I did it in my own lean profitable healthy way and it ended up great I think! 🙏😊

My favorite airlines are low cost ones like Easyjet, Air Asia, Transavia (and Ryanair if they'd not fly with 737MAX) and premium ones like Qatar The entire middle section is the one I try stay away from and where everything is expensive but usually sucks Usually there you have national flag carriers like KLM, British Airways, Lufthansa or Swiss which have very mediocre service for a high price With low cost airlines you don't pay a lot, but you get a basic functional no frills service, and because it's so high volume (Ryanair for example does the most flights out of any airline in Europe!), they have their workflow dialed in well With premium airlines like Qatar you pay a lot, but you get a very premium consistent service

If you speak Russian you will do very good, if you speak a bit of Armenian you will get discounts and gifts at most places Yerevan is well connected with Europe - my flight from Slovakia cost just €30 with Wizzair, same for Vienna last year And the main pro for me - Yerevan feels like an adult playground The prices are so low that stuff feels basically free if you earn in a European/US tech hub. You get a MUCH better quality of services than anywhere in the US or Europe The tax rate for individual properietors is 1% - set up a US LLC for stripe, and IP in Armenia in one day and you are set. Crypto dudes in Dubai pay x4 European prices for goods and services to get the same tax regime, you will pay less than half of them. You won’t ever need a car - a 30 minute taxi ride costs under 4 bucks here, and the whole city center is very walkable. Armenia is the only democracy in the Caucasus and if they play their cards right, I’m sure they are gonna reach at least the Polish level of income soon - I’m very bullish on it So now is very good time to come and visit here while Armenia is still cheap and low tax!

I believe nation states will keep becoming less and less relevant and that in the future everyone will be a nomad Most nation states (and well governments) barely function anymore through 100+ years of democratic baggage from laws and regulation that can't be reversed People can't save their countries or governments anymore through people's initiatives or getting into politics, because the systems are so old and in full gridlock Globalism has deservedly gotten a really bad rep the last 5 years though as we were too naive about it, but I think we should keep the good parts from it We should not take our identity from or defer our individual power to nation states ran by a political mafia class that's just perpetual robbing us and has no intention (or ability!) to actually improve society Nation states are a relatively new invention and barely 150 years old, before we had empires, kingdoms, smaller city states (kinda like municipalities) and tribes or local communities Over the years I've been increasingly red-pilled by @oskarth that nation states simply do not work and you need smaller sizes of government for things to work efficiently. Once it gets too big you get too much regulation and Kafka-esque bureaucracy and you end up with gridlock Which is Europe's entire problem right now! There's some exceptions, US and China seem to operate at large scale and are doing relatively well considering their size Anyway to get back to my point, I think it's preferable people think of themselves as global citizens, because it gives them stronger negotiation power in relation to nation states and governments as they're able to pack up and leave to where they're treated better And having people be mobile then also incentivizes other nation states (or smaller types of governance) to compete with them to attract the best people, and in response the other states will improve to attract people back Now with geopolitical tensions (like the stuff about Russia and Europe this week), it shows even more the benefit to be able to pack your bag and leave to a better place quickly is an extreme benefit now and in the future, possibly even for survival

🌎 Now redesigning the https://nomads.com/ profile trips globe from scratch I've always wanted to add space trips, so starting with the moon here which you can add as a future trip, also adding Mars etc. Other trips also need to work here though like going into orbit like @satofishi did on @SpaceX's Dragon capsule which will be more in reach for more people hopefully pretty soon!

By definition business is hard. Don't trust ppl who say it's easy and fast. People pay you to solve problem they can't solve. If something suddenly becomes easy, it's means it's also easy for everyone else = it's less valuable There is no secret roadmap, there is no money glitch, it's supposed to be hard and sometimes sucks. Customers don't pay you to have fun and enjoying life traveling in Asia, they pay u to get their problem solved better, faster or cheaper. But by all mean if you enjoy doing tiny mobile apps, building in public and posting silly pics on X, have fun! But it's not a business, it's a hobby IMO the best thing to do rn is to go out of the bubble and talk with people, to find problems worth solving. Especially in old/boring industries. Cause lots of ppl won't do it simply cause it's not sexy or interesting and won't make lots of views on social media, which is good, it means less noise! IMO you don't need to know the industry perfectly as long as you're curious AND talk with users on calls etc. to get feedback Just my opinion tho

Skyr is quite dry by itself, so I always add one fully squeezed lemon + cinnamon powder That makes it juicy and tasty Sometimes I also add 20g of 92% Vivani dark chocolate, I put it on a wooden plate, then cut it up with a knife into tiny almost powdery bits and put it in Kinda becomes like stracciatella, see pic 400g of Skyr has 48g of protein (12%!) and just 232 calories and it's only around 1 euro! Adding 20g of chocolate adds 130 calories and actually 2g of protein :D too, so I don't add chocolate every day Skyr is #3 on my calorie tracker leaderboard in highest protein density food (only after tuna which is dodgy regarding toxins) and just above chicken breast (which is just too dry and tasteless for me to eat), so Skyr it is! https://caltrack.levels.io/foods.php

RT @dvassallo: Yesterday I did a proactive whole-body MRI at @prenuvo for early cancer screening and other diseases. Luckily no worrisome or high risk findings. I had a few minor findings (common and benign things), and the explanation and reassurance was very well done in the report. The MRI even detected a lingering sinus infection I've had for the past 4 weeks! The images you get of your body are incredible too. It can't possibly hurt (except the pocket; it's $2,500) to do these regularly and monitor changes over time. Their MRI setup is quite nice too. They are a bit more spacious than the ones I've seen at hospitals, but most importantly they put special glasses on you with a 45° mirror that lets you watch a movie projected behind you. (You choose the movie/show.) Makes a huge difference for claustrophobia because the space feels much bigger when looking through the mirror. It's also nice you can see a clock in the screen, so you know approximately how much time you have remaining inside the magnet. Overall, impressed.

It's like being in Singapore or Japan. Travelling between cities is also a very pleasant experience. In Warsaw particularly, everybody is very well dressed, and walking around the city centre feels like such an elevated experience. It's crazy that Poland's GDP per capita has more than tripled in dollar terms over the past 20 years. I think people back home still see Poland as a very poor country, but that view is completely outdated now. In Krakow, I also met Italian girls who said they felt so safe walking around. I mentioned I was going to visit Bologna soon, and they joked that I'd only see Pakistani people. Poland has had a huge influx of Ukrainian immigration, and you notice it in Ubers, cafés, bars, etc. But because the culture and religion are similar, it doesn't feel like a big cultural contrast. Well, coming from Portugal, I find people here slightly blunter and ruder, but again, all of this is relative (Brazilians think we're rude, for example), so I suppose you just get used to it. The public transport works flawlessly, and the trains and buses are impeccably clean. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems Polish people have a stronger sense of civic responsibility when it comes to cleanliness than southern Europeans? Judging by the cities I've visited so far, this does feel like what you'd imagine when somebody says “Europe”. It's super refreshing to be here. I think locals probably take it for granted by now.

I think for Samsung and LG it's a competitive race to the bottom TVs in Korea are more expensive to produce than in China, but somehow they have to try survive So their idea (well Samsung started it) was to try make money in other ways, like putting ads in their TVs, then the advertisers asked for better targeting so they needed data, so they started tracking what you watch and listening to what you say at home with the microphone and sending it back to their servers It's a race to the bottom and this is stuff you actually DO need regulation for to stop it because they're all competing so without regulation this won't stop because people will just buy the cheaper TV I think

✨ Okay with lots of help from @javilopen and his Spanish scraping friends I've managed to vibe code my own @Scrapingbee alternative and replace my $249/mo Scrapingbee plan with my own $1/mo scraper running on my VPS! First I tried OpenSERP, an open source project that seems freshly maintained but it didn't work on my VPS IP or laptop IP and got blocked fast Then I tried to use residential IP proxies from IPRoyal but they were already quite tainted IPs meaning Google already knew they were scrapers and just blocked about 60% of them already, not so great, also didn't work! Then I discovered OpenSERP uses a vanilla headless Chrome, Google instantly detects that and blocks that, so literally the entire repo is useless cause it won't even work? I don't get why they don't say that in the docs? OpenSERP is even worse than just basic CURL, as my AI said: "plain curl got 7% blocked but OpenSERP's headless browser got 100% blocked" So then I just built my own with Playwright and a real Google Chrome on my VPS, headful and persistent context, and slow pacing like every 30 seconds or so And I got some better residential IP recommendations (which I can't tell you because thenhey t stop working!) Now I'm at about 90% success rate, which is similar or better than Scrapingbee And it costs me ~$1/mo (measured by GBs, obviously for text scraping I barely use a lot) instead of the $249/mo I paid Scrapingbee! My only remaining SaaS now are: - Cloudflare Domains - Cloudflare Email Sending - Cloudflare R2 Storage - Backblaze B2 for backups - Hetzner for all my servers for all my sites (VPS) - xAI for all LLMs for all my sites (so many things like moderation, writing emails, anything)

🎒After a decade, I have made https://nomads.com/ free for everyone now! Well almost free, it's $1 to sign up to avoid getting lots of spam The reason is 1) I have made enough money (from it) 2) charging for a community artificially limits the size, if you put the price at $299 you get 50 new members per month, at $99 you get 200 people, at $29 you get 400 people, etc. And this always annoyed me, I don't want to put a limit but I had to, to be able to make money from it, so it's free now I want it to be it the biggest community for digital nomads, world travelers, sovereign thinkers and network state type people For years it has has a great sponsor with @SafetyWing and I think that's maybe a better model for the future, get much more people in and then just add more sponsors Right now for the record it has 43,252 paid members (so about 300/mo for 12 years!), so it will be interesting to see what it can grow too I think now that AGI is on the horizon (or some say already here), online and offline (IRL) communities will become really important. Which is good btw) A regular boring but non-superficial SaaS app would do well 5 years ago but now it might not get anyone to sign up because it's so easy to vibe code by tens of thousands of other people So the distinguishing element becomes personality kinda!

With few exceptions, recycling ends up emitting more CO2 and costing more money, while landfills are cheap and secure. - Recycling mid-tier plastics (like plastic bottles or butter tubs) costs thousands of dollars per ton of CO2 saved. It's cheaper to do direct air CO2 capture than that! And there is no shortage of plastic, nor any problem with sequestering it in the ground once we're done with it. - Modern landfills are extraordinarily secure and are *much* more than just big piles of trash. They capture 75%–95% of methane gas. Groundwater contamination is doesn't really happen with landfills built since 1990. A study of 31 landfills built since 1988 in NY found no adverse effect at all on local groundwater quality. - The crusade against single-use plastics has driven us to products that use far more materials and energy and would need to be used an absurd number of times to actually be an improvement. A steel straw needs to be used 150 times to be worth using. A ceramic mug needs to be used 1,000 times to beat a polystyrene cup. A cotton bag needs to be reused 173 times to beat single-use. - Some things ARE worth recycling. Recycling metal saves a huge amount of energy and material – recycling aluminium saves 95% of the energy spent on making fresh stuff. So we do a lot of it already: about 30% of steel worldwide is recycled. Modern, well-run landfills cause minimal environmental damage. We have plenty of space for them – less than 0.01% of the US is used for landfill and only about 0.02% of Germany. We can even build on top of old landfills, so the land area is not spent permanently. My favorite part of @Cloudflare is how easy it is to use them for your clanker They always had a great API and all you have to do is add an API token and you can do almost everything you'd do by hand My favorite is registering domain names fully with Claude Code Get off Namecheap already, they don't let you do this (they'll hand you a link to buy instead) @marckohlbrugge was the first to tell me to use the API to manage CF btw

But with AI it's quite do-able I started first with New York City, it gives you an instant glimpse where crime is concentrated and where not, and of course it's tied to social development and income too Now I'll try add all other US cities and then do EU and rest of world! As always, data should be free, available for the people to see in an easy way (which now it's absolutely not) Because to solve problems in a city, you first need to know where those problems are, so I hope Hoodmaps can help with that a bit!

The continuation limitation: "Here's the chain of reasoning: 1. The dependency serializes everything (the big one). Right now 4 worker threads generate 4 different clips at the same time, because text-to-video needs nothing from any other clip — they're independent. Frame-chaining creates a hard dependency: clip N+1's input (its start frame) is clip N's output (its last frame). So you literally cannot begin generating N+1 until N has fully finished — generated on fal, downloaded, and its final frame extracted. That collapses 4-wide parallel generation down to 1-at-a-time. At ~15–40s per clip, serial gets you ~1.5–4 clips/min, but the channel airs 6/min — so the buffer would constantly starve and you'd see mostly reruns. You'd be trading the whole channel's liveness for smooth transitions. 2. Live + chat-driven means the "next" clip doesn't exist yet. Frame-chaining is natural for a pre-planned sequence (a VOD you're rendering ahead of time). But at the live edge, the next clip's content is decided by a chat message that hasn't arrived yet. You can't pre-chain toward a future you haven't been told about. 3. It fights the "one message = one clip" design. Each clip is supposed to be a viewer's fresh idea, pure. If you seed from the previous frame, "a dog news anchor" is forced to start from the last scene — so it becomes "banana slowly morphing into a dog news anchor." The meme visually bleeds into unrelated requests, which is the opposite of what one-message-one-clip is for. 4. Ordering assumptions break. VIP queue-jumping and newest-first picking assume clips are independent and reorderable. A frame-chain imposes a strict A→B→C order, so you can't cut levelsio's clip to the front or drop a fresh chat clip in — the chain would break. 5. Failure cascades. In parallel mode, one clip failing on fal doesn't affect the others. In a chain, if clip N fails, N+1 has no start frame and the whole sequence stalls. The reason I suggested it'd work only for story continuations is that those dodge every problem above: they already run one-at-a-time, only during quiet chat (no competing demand, so serialization costs nothing), they're meant to continue the same scene (so the visual carryover is a feature, not a conflict), and there's no VIP/fresh-clip to reorder around. That's the one place the seams line up. Everywhere else, the transitions would cost you the live, parallel, crowd-steered nature that makes the channel what it is. "

Only 4 videos per minute can be generated (4x 15 seconds = 1 minute), so that's kind of a limitation, not everyone gets their video generated if it gets busy Some people say "let people pay $$$ to bid on it" but that's less fun, I like kinda how 4chan-ey/Hoodmaps-ey it is now Also some people said I should connect the new video with the previous video by using its last frame, that's possible but it causes a technical challenge where you have to generate SO fast without ANY slowdowns (and sometimes there is slowdowns in generating) to get a perfect sequence going, but maybe I can do it in a slightly imperfect manner Watching this is oddly scarily addictive, and of course dystopian, but it's interesting to try these experiments early and see where it goes Thanks @rehan_shei + @marcantoinefon for the idea and @fal for VERY generously sponsoring and making this possible!

That'd mean social programs (like cities do now), but also enforcing clean and liveable streets (like many cities don't do now) for their tax payers This used to be a problem you'd only see in Los Angeles, San Francisco and places like Brazil. Now it's all over Europe too. We're in a down cycle of cities with more junkies and homeless in many cities worldwide, and people feeling less safe, kinda like the 1970s and 1980s! So I hope Hoodmaps helps improve cities with data!

I haven't directly connected my bug board https://ideasandbugs.com/ to my AI because I am very aware of prompt injection risks One safe way people mention would be to only give the AI access to collect user bug reports and feature requests, then do pull requests on GitHub that I then review myself before I approve or reject them But you can imagine a benign attacker can prompt a feature request with an elaborate prompt that tells it to add a backdoor to my sites BUT then in that prompt write also to report this bug in the pull request as a complete different bug like "pagination fix" and then make the code changes cryptical So now you don't see they added a backdoor to your server and you think you fixed pagination Until that time I'll just keep manually reading bug reports and feature requests and copying them in Claude Code on the server

I normally don't do these things but this guy is really special! His name is Lito (@avioesemusicas) and he's famous in Brazil for making really fun airplane videos, I watch them all the time too He explains how airplanes work in normal ELI5 language, and also explains airplane crashes etc, lots of people credit him for helping them stop being scared to fly as Lito showed how safe it is If you ever read Hacker News, you know about prions, which they love to discuss, they're one of the scariest things you'll ever read about, as they can flip seemingly at random in your body and cause Creutzfeldt–Jakob, a terminal disease I'm Dutch so we had a big outbreak of mad cow disease in the 1990s when I was a kid and I remember it well. You can get it from eating infected meat (but it's very rare), or prions can flip in your body randomly and cause it, or you can have surgery and one of the surgery tools can have it on them from previous patients The issue with that from what I read is that it's close to impossible to wash off, and it won't die at extreme heats either, you just have to throw away all surgery tools (which you can't) 85% of Creutzfeldt–Jakob is a randomly flipping prion though, so that's most probably Anyway, Lito here can participate in a promising trial by @Harvard @broadinstitute @ionispharma @mayoclinic but the next batch is only in October, so he's hoping the internet (like this tweet) can help him get in earlier, so he has a chance And that trial hopefully helps us find a cure for this crazy disease So if you can spread this, do so! This guy is really awesome, THANK YOU ❤️

When buying interior for our house we discovered most sofas, chairs, rugs, carpets, curtains now use materials that are almost without exception fully plastic And of course they shed all this plastic in their lifetime that they sit in your house, and you just end up breathing in nanoplastics over 10-20 years It's very hard to find stuff with natural materials, these days and if you do find it, it's super super expensive Also most times the sales people look at you like you're high when you ask for it But sir this is "ultrasuede alcantra olefin", all those terms are bullshit, and it's all plastic Unless they say cotton, wool, linen, silk, cork, or actual natural latex, it's generally just plastic and you'll be breathing it in (or worse) They often use fancy names to cover up it's all plastic: - "vegan leather" that's literally just polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic - "leatherette/pleather" same PVC - "air leather" perforated PU - "bonded leather" leather scraps glued together with PU - "alcantra" luxury sofas use this and guess what: it's polyester and PU blended - "ultrasuede" synthetic microfiber plastic - "olefin" stain resistant polypropylene (PP) plastic - "polyamide" a mesh of synthetic polymers - "lustrous" or "trevia cs", both used in curtains, both fully polyester For our house we mostly have cotton, wool and leather finishes and it wasn't easy to get that, most is custom finishing because almost nobody asks for it!

🇬🇷 Greece now has the highest AC adoption rate in the entire Europe 85% of homes have AC installed, compared to a still measly 20% on average in entire Europe They love AC so much here that they even installed it at the 🏛️ Acropolis! 😍 Some countries like Spain have pretty good AC rates too at ~41% but they usually set it at a still pretty hot temperature of 26C Not in Greece, everywhere I go they're blasting freezing cold air and it's set to 18C An example for the rest of Europe 👏

I was in Lisbon yesterday where we were literally chased by drug dealers because they asked me if I wanted to buy and I said "no thanks" I try avoid the city, obviously it's localized to a few parts, but I'd also add, not really, it's kinda spreading out to all over the city There's an entire "crackolandia" now near Campo de Ourique if you drive off from there to the highway, full of crack zombies Police generally do nothing Odd about that part btw is it's literally a mix of I think social housing and crack addicts, so you see families having lunch outside while people a few meters away are shooting up And that part isn't even the worst

My squat is 125 kg/275 lbs/1.6x bw (intermediate) My bench is 100 kg/220 lbs/1.3x bw (intermediate) My deadlift is 125 kg/275 lbs/1.6x bw (novice) I think wanna move slowly from intermediate to advanced I think, I don't need to be elite lifter My deadlift now is way too low for how heavy my squat and bench are, but that's because I've always been scared of breaking my back with it, so I was always careful, so I am fixing that now But I am very very proud of myself, I used to be skinny 50 kg and weak! Now I'm 75kg and very strong! Intermediate level lifting is stronger than ~50% of lifters (not society!), advanced is stronger than ~80%, elite is stronger than ~95%. If you look society wise, these lifts make me stronger than 95% of people, because most people don't even lift! I always find it funny when you post lifts you get anon accounts calling you weak, which makes no sense, just going to the gym 3x per week, you're probably stronger than 95% of people! Which for me is a big achievement 👏

Some things I forgot pt 6: - you want floor to ceiling glass windows, but you also want your house to be spacious enough that it can have rooms inside which are not facing the outside for privacy reasons, if that's not possible you want to be able to have ALL windows be fully shut with external electric shutters/blinds (which you want anyway) for privacy and safety, especially at night otherwise you're sitting in your living room and anyone can look inside

Some things I forgot pt 5: - Measure/analyze the place you buy a house for radon background radiation, it significantly varies by region but even by plot of land! It's a radioactive gas from natural rock and soil that causes cancer and it varies a lot. I got an @Airthings sensor that can measure Radon, problem is if you buy a house you gotta measure it for a few hours at least to get a good reading, but important! In addition, it makes sense to just get the soil tested wherever you buy a house to see it's not contaminated, lots of soil is!

Things I learnt after buying a house after 1 year and going through lots of shitty products and things and what I'd do know if I bought or build a house again: - home assistant + their HA Green (little box that's open source to connect all your devices with Home Assistant) - LG or Mitsubishi air conditioning in EVERY room, both cooling/heating, every unit should have its own outdoor unit, or you get annoying things like you can't cool one room and heat the other at same time! I think they're called mono splits - xiaomi air purifier in every room, big spaces get the big purifiers, smaller rooms small ones (most air purifiers are too small for the space they're in!) - a good smart lock, it's so good because you come home and your door auto opens (esp nice if you carry stuff) - matic vacuum (they gave me one so I have to disclose but it's GREAT, all the Roomba and Chinese ones suck) - unifi router with access points, outdoor extenders, cameras, doorbell, all PoE - starlink with local fiber backup - tesla dreamwall or other batteries sufficient to power for days (means like 4-8 batteries @ 13kwh per maybe!), then connect your freezer, fridge, stove, etc to it (heavy loads) so you can keep and cook food when shit goes down - related get a Weber Genesis gas bbq so you can always cook food, fun with friends too - solar panels actually sufficient to power (so like 30-50, crazy number but if you get like 15 it's just not enough?) - pool is honestly overrated, you'll almost never use it, also lots of maintenance (we had a massive water leak with a $10,000 water bill this month, so F that) - but u DO want a standalone jacuzzi, that's nice, with lights! - if you care about safety get steel doors with massive locks for other rooms, and make those safe rooms, so if someone comes in you have multiple layers of security - also get weapons to defend you and your family where legally possible! - garden should be permaculture kinda concept with vegetables, herbs and stuff you can grow to eat, like strawberries, rosemary etc - harvia dry sauna, and if outside, add a little changing room to it so you don't exit in the cold outside! - related, build a home gym, get a big power rack with cables, free barbell, smith barbell, everything built in, and then some dumbbells and kettlebells, and a gym bike like concept2, maybe concept2 rowing machine too, with that you can do almost anything to stay fit! then hire personal trainer to come to your house or you will never go! - ALL lights should be changeable to red at night, via home assistant, so you can make everything red at 10pm for sleep! - also get outdoor lights for fun and security (burglars hate lights) - ALL windows black out blinds on outside, for both security and just NO light during sleep - when you're not sleeping, get lots of sunlight, big floor to ceiling glass windows, it's great! - all doors to outside flat on floor level, no stepover edges (like in PT) - preferrably lots of land around your house so you're not close to any neighbors (neighbors are always annoying even if they're nice!) - fellow water kettle, fellow ode 2 coffee grinder - sofas, other interior, make sure to find natural materials, 99% of interior is polyester/plastic - LG makes the best TVs, end of story, but their software is shit and spies on you, NEVER connect them to the internet/WiFi, instead buy an Apple TV box and connect that, that doesn't spy on you and has no ads, then connect it with HDMI and you're good, also no annoying LG TV updates - re: TVs, people show these formulas of like blalba distance to sofa from tv is N meter so now you need 60", in my experience they always sell you a TV like 10-15" too small, we had 77" LG TV and it was like diving into the screen, beautiful, but then we followed the formula and changed it for 65", not the same! get bigger! - get a VERY big bed, 2m wide by 2m long at least, get natural bed sheets/duvet and seperate duvet from partner, the less you wake up when your partner moves the better - guest rooms are a bad idea, it's annoying to have friends and family IN your house for weeks or a month, good luck trying to have SEX! better get a small house or apt near for them or put them in airbnb!!! - add a delivery box outside ur house so delivery people can put packages inside without having to ring your doorbell 10x per day - get a $500 mini projector and big projection screen outside (or a white wall) so you can have movie nights outside w friends
